Online Swimming Community Launches in Effort to Save Lives

MINNEAPOLIS -- Each day in the U.S., an average of 10 unintentional drownings occur – 70% of them are adults. Despite their lack of swimming ability, many adults still venture out into lakes, oceans, rivers and swimming pools for recreational activities. A new online swim community, Swimmunity™ (www.swimmunity.com), is launching today to bring greater awareness to the need for adult swim lessons. According to the CDC, between 35-50% of all U.S. adults do not know how to swim and the rate exceeds 60% for some minority populations.

Swimmunity™ features the benefits of swimming, help finding a swim lesson provider, water safety resources and other useful swimming information for the beginner. By providing interactive community functionality, the site will allow potential new swimmers to ask questions and seek support from others as they begin their swim lesson journey. The site stresses the importance of water safety, because even strong swimmers can get into trouble and drown. Swim lessons alone aren’t enough; lessons plus comprehensive water safety knowledge is they key to preventing drownings.“Summers are filled with frequent news reports of adult drownings. This is a preventable occurrence and learning to swim is an important first step. Water can be scary for many adults. But swim lessons and water safety knowledge can begin to change that,” says Rodriguez. “Better yet, swimming is one of the best cardio-conditioning exercises you can do because water provides 12-15 times more resistance than air and it’s low-impact. It’s not uncommon to see very active swimmers in their 70s, 80s and even 90s. It can be an immensely healthy life-long physical activity.”Swimmunity.com was founded in August 2011 by Larissa Rodriguez, MBA, a marketing executive in the health care industry. Larissa learned to swim in 2010 at the age of 40 and discovered there was a significant lack of information about how to find and begin adult swim lessons. An ardent advocate for reducing the disparities that exist in swimming, she serves on the board of directors of Minneapolis Swims, a grass-roots initiative for bringing swim lessons to the inner city children of Minneapolis.
